Regulatory Affairs

Pet food regulations continue to evolve as new products are introduced and new issues emerge. PFI's regulatory efforts always have focused on serving the industry and consumers. Pet food makers are dedicated to fostering scientific advancement, dialogue with government agencies, and industry-wide cooperation.

PFI works closely with dog and cat food manufacturers to develop industry-wide consensus on key issues such as food safety, product labeling and ingredients. PFI has established and maintains a positive working relationship with federal and state regulatory officials, through which it seeks to provide valuable industry input into regulatory and policy decision making affecting the production and sale of dog and cat food.

PFI's regulatory affairs committee, a network of issue-driven subcommittees and task forces, brings together pet food industry specialists with technical, nutritional, operations and regulatory expertise to represent the collective voice of the pet food industry. On behalf of the U.S. pet food makers, PFI:

  • maintains close working relationships with regulatory organizations – including AAFCO, FDA, USDA – as well as to other industry associations in the United States and abroad to provide data and recommendations on behalf of the U.S. pet food industry;
  • produces guidance documents and publications to assist pet food manufacturers with increasingly complex issues such as food safety, regulatory requirements, and labeling.
