Alaskan Leader Seafoods Featured on “MIGHTY SHIPS”

First Episode Airing in May

SEATTLE (May 20, 2016) The fishing vessel Northern Leader, the flagship vessel operated by Alaskan Leader Seafoods hits the North Bering Sea in Season 9 of Discovery Channels “MIGHTY SHIPS”. The amazing episode of “MIGHTY SHIPS” airs on Sunday, May 22 at 7:00 pm (ET) in Canada. The airing of the episode in the U.S. is to be determined.

The reason for featuring the fishing vessel Northern Leader is simple—it’s the largest and most innovative commercial fishing vessel built in the U.S. in over 20 years. This Alaskan freezer-longline fishing vessel is 184’ long and packed with the most innovative processing equipment that ensures the highest quality longline cod product in the world.

“Filming for MIGHTY SHIPS was exhilarating, to say the least,“ said Northern Leader Captain Shaun Andrew. “The cameramen really had a thrill when hurricane force winds came through the Bering Sea. But I think they were more excited when they saw just how pristine the fish were and how fierce the fishing environment is that we work in. They captured some great footage and this will be a very exciting show to watch.”

Produced by Discovery’s in-house production unit, Exploration Production Inc. (EPI), and seen in more than 150 countries around the world, the long-running Canadian series MIGHTY SHIPS sets sail on a new high-stakes voyage, taking viewers on the journey and below the surface to explore places and technologies that are usually off-limits to land lovers. The all-new season features hospital and cruise ships and subsea vessels, with ports of call including Norway, Colombia, and of course Alaska where the Northern Leader is in the spotlight.

The Northern Leader is no ordinary boat. It employs advanced technology throughout its many integrated ship systems. This eco-friendly longline vessel combines a very low environmental impact method of fishing with onboard processing capabilities to allow for both maximum utilization of vessel catch and the highest quality Alaskan whitefish production possible. Designed for service in the longline fisheries of the North Pacific, Bering Sea, and the Aleutian Islands, the vessel catches Alaskan Cod, Sablefish, and other groundfish species.

The Northern Leader is the fourth vessel owned and operated by Alaskan Leader Fisheries Corporation. Joining fishing vessel the Northern Leader is the Alaskan Leader, Bering Leader, and Bristol Leader, to form the most modern longline fleet in the State of Alaska.

Several factors set Alaskan Leader Seafoods apart from other providers starting with its custom designed fleet, its ability to access the best fishing grounds, and its commitment to employing the “Hook and Line” catch method. All this makes Alaskan Leader Seafoods the world’s most reliable, sustainable, and progressive fishing company producing Alaska cod products.

Alaskan Leader Seafoods sells wild, Hook and Line caught Alaskan cod  in the United States, Asia, and Europe under the Alaskan Leader Seafoods brand name. The products are sold as frozen H&G, IQF fillets, vacuum-sealed portions, natural portions, and fish & chip portions. It also sells other parts of the cod to the pet food industry as well as to the fitness and wellness marketplace.
